'Shi Gu' said that as a member of Tzu Chi's first relief team to arrive in Myanmar in early May, this trip to Kun-gya-gon. She had visited many villages devastated by the cyclone to extend comfort in the last two months.
Seeing the suffering in the rural areas always made her feel sad...
"What can we do for them?" was the common question of all volunteers whenever they visited the villages and met the kind and simple people who have suffered so much.
Some of the residents from the far-reaching villages were always represented by a few people in the distribution of either rations, rice seeds or fertilizers held in Kun-gya-gon.
Upon further inquiry, volunteers found that the villagers have to take a 12 to 13-hour round trip to Kun-gya-gon that involves taking a boat and car, and some walking. Moreover, they do not have the money to pay for the transportation fees.
How tough could the journey be? One must try it out in order to find out. The volunteers of several countries decided to visit four of the villages. At the same time, they could check on how the villagers have fared with the fertilizers that Tzu Chi had sent to them earlier.
In July, Tzu Chi had arranged for the supplier to ship the fertilizers directly to the villages for distribution by their village chiefs according to the size of each recipient's land.
